The constraint

Four technologies specified by three different trades, each sized in isolation, with a supply that could not carry all of them at once.

Why we designed it this way

Sized individually, the heat pump and the charge point would have needed a supply upgrade. Designed together with load curtailment, they did not — the car simply stops charging while the heat pump runs hard, which the household never notices.

One control strategy rather than four apps. Surplus solar goes to hot water, then the battery, then the car, in that order, because that is the order of value for this household's actual usage pattern.

Four technologies behaving as one system, and a supply upgrade avoided entirely.
